You Got the Promotion… So Why Does It Feel Like Pressure Instead of Pride?

You worked hard for it.
You earned the promotion.
You reached the milestone you had been working towards.
So why does it feel like anxiety has arrived before excitement? If you've ever stepped into a bigger role and felt more overwhelmed than proud, you're not alone. It's something I hear often in coaching and if I'm honest, I've experienced it too.
Why Promotions Can Feel Overwhelming
We expect a promotion to boost our confidence. But psychologically, it doesn't just change your job title.
It changes your identity.
Suddenly, there are more expectations, greater visibility, and bigger responsibilities. While your role changes overnight, your confidence doesn't always keep pace.
When Growth Feels Like Pressure
Our nervous system is wired to notice change, even positive change.
A new role brings uncertainty, so it's natural to think:
"Can I really handle this?"
"What if I'm not as capable as they think?"
"What if I let everyone down?"
These thoughts don't mean you don't belong. They simply mean you're growing.

Confidence Comes Through Experience
One of the biggest myths about career growth is that confidence comes first.
It doesn't.
Confidence is built by showing up, learning, making mistakes, and gradually growing into the role.
Every great leader was once new.
One reminder I often share with clients is this: You weren't promoted by accident. You were recognised for your potential.
Give yourself permission to catch up to your new reality.
Growth isn't always comfortable but discomfort doesn't mean you're underqualified. It often means you're expanding.
One day, this role that feels unfamiliar today will simply feel like where you belong.
